Cook and Thrive, the cookbook

A powerful expression of life, one bite at a time

Cooking a cultural dish can be deeply meaningful for someone with cancer – it becomes a form of self-care that connects them to their roots, identity, and community during an uncertain time.

Our Cook and Thrive project offered service users opportunities to recreate a beloved dish from ‘back home’ – providing a reassuring sense of familiarity and control – two things that cancer can often take away.

The stories, memories – and delicious recipes – that emerged were so powerful, they decided to turn them into a cookbook . . .

Since our beginnings, the organisation has grown from strength to strength, now delivering support across Manchester, Salford, and Trafford. Over the years, we’ve shared countless moments with those we support – moments of courage, laughter, and sometimes tears.

A humbling experience

Our CEO attends King’s Reception at Buckingham Palace

On 1 May 2025, our CEO, Marcella Turner, had the honour of attending the King’s Reception at Buckingham Palace. His Majesty King Charles hosted the event to recognise individuals affected by cancer, as well as the leaders, organisations, and community champions who work tirelessly to support those living with a cancer diagnosis.

Reflecting on the experience, Marcella shared:

“It was truly a humbling experience… being in the presence of so many people doing excellent work across the UK, those individuals with a cancer diagnosis and of course, meeting King Charles. What I do is borne out of passion and wanting to make a positive difference for community members impacted by cancer. To be recognised in this way is great, not just for me but also for Can‑Survive UK and everyone involved.”

Marcella’s invitation is a meaningful acknowledgement of the vital work Can‑Survive UK delivers within our communities. We are incredibly proud of her dedication and the recognition it brings to our mission.
